The world has become an even less hospitable place for those who identify as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex (LGBTQI+). Florida is one of 18 states that has adopted laws that discriminate against LGBTQI+ people, most recently in 2021 and 2022, most notably, Florida House Bill 1557 (Don\u2019t Say Gay Bill).<\/span><\/p>\n

The five National Associations of Librarians of Color (NALCo) that serve as hosts of the 2022 Joint Conference of Librarians of Color (JCLC 2022) condemn these discriminatory laws and decry them as being in direct opposition to the values on which the library profession serves. Included in them is the fight for equity, diversity and inclusion, intellectual freedom, open access to information, and the right of individuals to live without discrimination based on their sexual orientation, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, or disability.<\/span><\/p>\n

Florida was selected as the site of JCLC 2022 in 2019, prior to the hate-based law. The selection committee found the location of St. Pete\u2019s Beach welcoming and the selected property, TradeWinds Island Grand Resort, a safe environment to gather, learn, network and celebrate our unifying mission.<\/span><\/p>\n

While JCLC is contractually obligated to use this site, we have a responsibility to support our LGBTQI+ colleagues, allies, friends, and community in their struggle for justice. JCLC stands with the right to self-determination and for everyone to live their lives without fear of violence or repercussions.<\/span><\/p>\n

As a sign of solidarity JCLC chose to elevate LGBTQI+ voices in our programming, events and presence throughout our conference.<\/span><\/p>\n
